FLOOR CARE

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

The less dirt that is tracked on your floors, the cleaner it will stay!  Simply put: Keep dirt, sand, mud, rocks, grime, grass and grease outside, and you will automatically have cleaner floors inside!  The second line of defense is to place mats in entryways, foyers and all egresses to the outdoors.  Mats are also suggested at heavily used locations, such as in front of the kitchen sink or stove.

Protective mats and pads are advisable under heavy furniture.  Chairs legs and sofas should have floor protectors or floor glides to help alleviate indentation and crushing in the flooring.

Furniture should be moved occasionally.  This will help in a number of areas including; redirecting traffic flow and wear patterns; allowing for cleaning under furniture areas; and changing spaces that are receiving direct sunlight and might be subject to fading.

REGULAR OVERALL CLEANING

Frequent sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping will help keep particles of debris from becoming hard-to-remove stains.  Clean up spills immediately.  Hard surface floors should be swept regularly so that sand, dirt, dust particles and other substances, do not scratch the finish.

Laminate cleaning tips

Laminate floors are incredibly durable and, therefore, are the perfect choice for high traffic areas and busy family households.  Vacuum or sweep laminate floors regularly for easy upkeep.  Do not wax, polish, sand or refinish these floors.  Follow manufacturers’ recommendations for specific cleaning guidelines.

Hardwood cleaning tips

Hardwood floors fill a room with timeless beauty and add warmth to any room.  Improvements in technology have produced hardwood floors with durable finishes that are much easier to maintain than in years past.  Today’s hardwood floors can be easily maintained with regular vacuuming and sweeping to keep particles off the floor and minimize the opportunity for scratches.  Use a damp cloth to clean up spills, and always avoid allowing water or any kind of liquid to pool on the floor.  Do not use oil-based products, wax, polish, steel wool, or abrasive cleaners of any kind, as they will dull and damage hardwood floors.  Follow manufacturers’ recommendations for specific cleaning guidelines.

Ceramic cleaning tips

Ceramic tiles come in a wide, almost endless, variety of colors, shapes, textures and sizes.  The tiles are made from clay and can provide beauty, charm and appeal to any room.   Ceramic is durable, easy to care for, and low maintenance.  A damp mop with a small amount of mild household soap is all that is required to clean ceramic floors.  Mop weekly, or as needed, for heavy traffic areas.  Follow manufacturers guidelines for grout cleaning products designed specifically for your floor.

Area rug cleaning tips

Area rugs are extremely diverse and can be functional or decorative.  They are made in a variety of styles and with a wide range of products.  Therefore cleaning guidelines are as diverse as the products.  Follow the general rule of keeping debris off your area rugs, and cleaning up spills immediately with a damp cloth.  If the rug has fringes, be careful that these do not get caught in the vacuum cleaner.  This can permanently damage the rug.  Every year or two, depending on the level of traffic, consider having the rug professionally cleaned.  Specific cleaning guidelines will depend on the type of rug.

General cleaning tips

Be careful when moving large furniture objects and appliances.  Use mats and furniture-sliders when necessary for protection.  Be aware of spiked heels, cleats, golf shoes, and other footwear that could damage the floor.  Keep your pets’ nails trimmed.  Clean up all pet urine immediately.
