All glues are not alike! This is important because typical "wood" glues are designed to resist flow during the glue-up process that's required in cabinetry making, etc. If used with laminate floors, these glues would make the installation more difficult. They would make it very difficult to actually push the pieces of laminate floor together. S-1800 Glue incorporates unique flow properties which actually make it easier to fit the pieces together. Basically, the glue is designed to thin out when compressed so it does not resist movement. In addition, it has a rapid initial set and dries to a very strong, water-resistant bond. This is critical to the long-term success of the installation because it is the glue that creates the water-resistant joint. So, a high quality glue, specially formulated, is critical to the success of the installation.
When using Glue Laminate Floors
Apply a thin bead of glue, approximately 3/32" in diameter, to the top surface of the tongue of the piece on the floor and a thin bead of glue, approximately 3/32" in diameter, to the bottom lip of the groove on the piece to be installed. If necessary, gently tap against the block to tighten the joint. A thin, continuous bead of glue should ooze out through the top of the joint. This insures the joint will be water-resistant after drying. Applying too much glue makes it difficult to tap the pieces together and may result in "ski-jumping" at the seams due to pressure generated from tapping or too much moisture at the joint.
When using the Locking Laminate Floors
-
Light Commercial/Commercial applications MUST be installed using a 3/32" bead of glue on the top of the tongue ONLY.
-
Full Bathroom installations (for residential use only) apply a thin, continuous 3/32" bead of glue to the top of the tongue ONLY and 100% silicone caulk must be used around the entire perimeter. Click on this link for Full Bathroom Installation instructions.
-
Under door jambs or toe kicks follow installations for reducing the lip of the groove to fit the laminate together (see Installation Manual F-5061). Apply a thin 3/32" bead of glue on the top of the tongue ONLY.
