How much laminate flooring will you need?

It's a good idea to take the time to estimate how much laminate flooring material you'll need, even if you're planning to have a professional install your floor. You'll avoid buying too much, or worse, getting too little and having to place another order. Here's the simple way to figure out what you'll need:

Flooring material

  1. Using a 25 foot metal tape measure, measure the length and width of your room(s). Always measure all the way into the doorway and all the way into closets. It sounds fundamental, but be sure to run your tape measure all the way to the farthest wall.
  2. Draw a picture of your room(s) to scale and write in the length and width.
  3. Multiply the length times the width. That tells you the total amount of laminate flooring in square feet that you'll need to do the job. Then add an additional 10% for waste (and for "attic stock" to be saved for possible repairs later on).  When you place your order online, Efloors.com will automatically calculate the number of full boxes of laminate flooring you'll need.

Trims and moldings

Check out our trims and moldings page to figure out what's needed for your job. Then take a look at the trim, molding and other accessories on the Efloors.com product page of the particular laminate floor you're buying. These products are ordered by the piece.

Underlayment

It's smart to protect your laminate flooring investment with a good underlayment. Decide what type of underlayment you need for the conditions in your home, and order a high-quality product that's made or recommended by the manufacturer of your laminate floor.

When ordering underlayment, use only the actual square footage of your room(s) as the basis for your order. There's no need to add 10% for waste; underlayment is typically sold in rolls of 100 sq. ft., so chances are you'll end up with a little extra anyway.
