The Karastan Rug Story

Karastan area rugs used to be called "Mystery Rugs" or "Wonder Rugs of America" because during the 1933-34 Chicago World’s Fair, Karastan invited the world to walk on an oversized version of its classic Kirman pattern. Over 5 million people walked on that rug. Afterward, they cleaned half of it so one could see how well it recovered its original beauty and luster. The other half of the rug was left in its filthy, almost unrecognizable state. That rug can still be seen today at the Karastan home office.

Karastan has been an American maker of fine machine-woven wool rugs for over three quarters of a century. Since its beginning in 1928 when the American retailer and textile manufacturer Marshall Field built and patented an Axminster loom capable of recreating the detailed craftsmanship of hand-woven rugs, Karastan has continued to grow its reputation for elegant styling and fine quality. Karastan rugs are machine-woven in the U.S.A. of the finest grade of imported worsted wool yarn.
